Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (E.S.W.L.)

Method by which without surgery the rupture of urinary stones is produced by using shock waves, which fragment the stones and allow their elimination.

The equipment used locates the calculus by means of ultrasound or X-rays, and thus focuses the shock wave on it for its rupture. Generally, a few sessions are enough to complete the treatment.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and after it is done it can be removed by your own means to your home, preferably with a companion.

It has its precise indication, and is generally limited to stones up to 10 mm. in diameter, although each particular case should always be evaluated.

It is used as a first choice or to complete any surgical treatment with residual lithiasis.
